Exercise Is Not Just Body Beautiful!

Annie has been a copy and creative writer for over 15 years, facing her own challenges in relation to health and personal issues.  Keeping physically fit has helped her keep her mind fit and active. Here she passes on some tips on how to boost your brain power.

As a creative writer, I have to spend a lot of time at my desk.  There are occasions when ideas are a little slow or I am researching a topic that is complicated and laborious. It is at times like this that my lifetime of keeping fit and playing sports is invaluable. I find there is nothing better than fresh air or exercise to get my creative juices flowing.

Keeping fit is vital in today’s fast paced world and it will pay dividends not only physically but mentally as well. It is so important to keep active and it doesn’t have to be expensive. There are lots of things to do – it’s not all about joining a gym which can be quite a considerable financial outlay.

Keep fit on the cheap 

Walking is a healthy form of exercise and won’t cost you a penny. You may be able to walk to work or to the shops or you could discover some breath taking scenery nearby.

Think about using the stairs and not the lift at work. If you are working from home, make sure you get up regularly from your desk and walk about the house. Come up with a stretching routine and do this every couple of hours. If walking is a little slow for you, why not get yourself a pair of trainers and start running.

Cycling is great exercise too and again once you’ve got your bike, it’s free but always make sure you are well lit up and wearing high visibility clothing. There are some super cycling tracks that have been designated as cycle routes by your local Council.

Mixing fitness with pleasure 

Some leisure facilities run by councils can be free of charge or available for a minimal charge.  There are also team sports, why not try netball, hockey or football? These are relatively inexpensive and you will meet people and make friends at the same time. Most towns and even villages have tennis clubs and although they do have a membership fee, it will only work out to be a few pounds a month.

Use the internet to find out what activities are going on in your area. How about trying dance classes, Pilates or Yoga?

Try to exercise for 30 minutes a day and there will be an immediate effect not only on your health but your mental capacity. You will find that you have more energy and your mood will be improved. It has been shown that physical activity stimulates various brain chemicals that will leave you feeling happier and more relaxed. You may even sleep better. Keeping fit sharpens your memory and your ability to learn new things.

Exercise boosts creativity and refreshes the body and the brain at the same time. It works for me, so why not get physical! You really don’t know where it will take you.
