I’m Good Enough!
Our blog this month is written by one of our volunteers who has her own take on what being ‘good enough’ actually means.
“ I’m good enough.” That was the memorable phrase uttered by GBBO winner Candice Brown. She used GBBO as an affirmation of her worth. Let’s say now. “We have always been good enough!”
From the beginning of humankind we have all been good enough, but social orders have insisted otherwise. Why? Conveniently women are seen as the weaker vessel, historical and today yet common sense would say, if that were true, the human race would have died out millenniums ago.
If you take a moment to think about it ‘woman are amazing’. So what is there to fear? Men are amazing too, so why can’t social orders recognize it? Could it be fear? Fear of losing control. It’s beyond me.
We’ve had centuries of tyrants looking into their mirrors, ” Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the most powerful of them all’, and the game of fear has been played ever since.
Centuries of conditioning have etched in our minds ‘I’m not good enough’.
This is the 21st century. Everything is changing. Uncertain times yes, with inequality in pay, housing, homelessness, mental health concerns, austerity, the uncertainty of Brexit, Clinton/Trump. And a lot more.
Women have had to support each other saying we are all strong, we are all vulnerable. Let’s say “We are not only good enough, we are very good indeed!”
By supporting each other, we can do this. Women all over the world and locally are getting together, accessing support and information, finding and creating work for themselves and regaining independence. It’s hard, but it can and is being achieved.
So Candice Brown, WayfinderWoman congratulations you, you are magnificent!
And as it says in Janet Street-Porter’s wonderful article following GBBO on hidden nuggets of fear, if you want your own lipstick Candice, of course, you can have it. If you want to run an organization, of course, you can.
And if you want to take ‘Bake Off’ into Space, well you have already done it.
